When a veteran named John* connected with Catholic Charities in April 2023, he had been working with a VA program to cope with his substance abuse issues and PTSD.
Veterans Services Opens Doors to Permanent Housing
John was ready to graduate from the program and sought out the assistance of Catholic Charities Veterans Services. Veterans Services helps veterans and veteran families who are facing a housing crisis obtain stable housing and provides case management and resources.
Unfortunately, John was facing housing barriers due to a felony and poor credit. He needed a program that could support him in his search for permanent housing and help him overcome these barriers.
Resources and Support Help Veterans Stay Housed
With the assistance of a Veterans Services case manager, John was able to find permanent housing. The program was able to pay for the deposit and six months’ rent. Veterans Services also enrolled John in a program that pays half of his rent every month while he gets back on his feet.
In addition, John received taxi vouchers that provided him with transportation to and from doctor’s appointments. He also gained access to food boxes to ease the burden on his budget.
Working Toward a Bright Future
John is working to increase his disability status related to a significant back injury he received during his service. An increase in disability status will provide him with additional support when it comes to finances and health care.
He has also applied for scholarships that assist in retraining veterans. In the future, John hopes to enter the field of computer science and programming.
He has been a shining example of how, with just a little added support, a veteran can go from experiencing homelessness to being permanently housed. John has stayed in close touch with his case manager and is known to refer other veterans to Catholic Charities. He wants others to receive the same level of life-changing assistance.
