Statistically, veterans are at a higher risk of homelessness than non-veterans. Individuals with a history of substance abuse, severe mental illness and low income have higher risk factors for homelessness. Additionally, veterans who left service with other than honorable discharges or misconduct were at higher risk of homelessness.

Veterans make up about 6 percent of the population of the United States but 8 percent of the country’s homeless population.

Many of the basics needs that most people take for granted are unreachable for people experiencing homelessness. Have access to running water, being able to wash their hands with warm water and soap, a steady and reliable supply of power, healthy food, and clean clothes are out of reach when you are homeless or living in your car.

It’s estimated that 11-20% of veterans have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) each year. Thirty percent of Vietnam era veterans are estimated to have PTSD in their lifetime. Difficulty in obtaining benefits means that veterans may not receive a diagnosis or adequate treatment.

It’s practically impossible to get a job without a mailing address or identification like a driver’s license or Social Security card. Some jobs require a specific uniform that cost money before the job begins. All of these items are difficult to acquire and keep if you don’t have a home, creating insurmountable barriers. Additionally, over 20% of Arizona veterans have a service-connected disability rating. Without proper accommodations, which some veterans may not be comfortable asking for, excelling at or even keeping a job could be difficult.

There are many ways to help veterans and their families. Our programs for veterans are always in need of in-kind gifts. These items can be found on our Amazon Charity List. Monetary donations can help buy items that are not donated, or depending on program needs, could help with apartment or utility deposits, required tools or training for a new job, refurbish a bicycle to provide transportation, or a multitude of other things.
