Case Manager Walks Alongside Veteran Experiencing Homelessness

Written by

For Danielle Holloway, a case manager for the Veterans Services program, helping 61-year-old veteran Sam had a lasting impact. The Veterans Services program helps veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness find stable housing and provides ongoing case management that includes financial planning, assistance applying for VA benefits, emergency assistance and more.

Seeking Help at the Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope

Sam had lost his job due to COVID and his worsening eyesight was preventing him from finding a job. His roommate was understanding at first but grew tired of assisting Sam.

Further complicating his situation, Sam had been placed probation and had no forms of identification, transportation, health benefits or access to food. These challenges led him to seek assistance at the Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Danielle met Sam at the Center, and he was accepted for a 90-night stay. Sam became close friends with a fellow veteran during his stay and they decided to find housing together and become roommates.

Connecting to Life-Changing Resources

Unfortunately, his recent legal issues made him ineligible for the building they were considering. But Sam was determined. He continued making progress, securing health benefits and eye care. In December 2021, when his 90 days at the Center were up, Sam was moved to emergency housing in Kingman.
With a renewed sense of determination, Sam sought new resources in the area. He had been struggling to locate the nearest bus stop, so Danielle took the initiative to show him the way and point out any hazards he should avoid.

Finding Housing and Stability

With the assistance of Catholic Charities, Sam obtained transportation to get to eye appointments, the grocery store and the lease signing for his new home. Sam worked with the VA to secure housing in Kingman at the Kingman Veteran Villas.

Danielle and the team helped Sam learn the placement of the items, outlets, closets and appliances in his new home. He received a new bed, and Danielle helped him unpack and make his new house feel like home.

Now that he is safely housed, Sam continues to work with his VA social workers to increase his income and keep current with his eye appointments. Danielle went above and beyond not only to get Sam into permanent housing, but to take the time to make sure he could be successful on his own.
