Choosing to place your child with an adoptive family is one of the most difficult decisions any parent can make.

At 8 months pregnant, Crystal was 22 years old and living with her boyfriend, who was not her child’s biological father.  She had no money and no job. She needed to make a decision.

No Place for a Baby

She worried about her future and the future of her child. Her circumstances were overwhelming, and she didn’t see how she could overcome the challenges before her, especially with a baby on the way.

A friend told Crystal about Catholic Charities adoption program. She called the toll free number and spoke with pregnancy counselor, Teresa Doud. They made plans to meet at Crystal’s rural home, as soon as possible.

Choosing Parenting or Adoption

During the meeting Crystal shared her concerns as Doud listened and then explained different resources and life-affirming options. Catholic Charities pregnancy counselors offer support so that women can understand how parenting and adoption will impact their lives and make sure they are equipped to make the best choice for themselves and their baby.

Crystal decided that adoption would be the best choice. She selected an adoptive family but delivered the baby before they were able to meet. During delivery Crystal changed her mind. She loved her baby and couldn’t bear to lose her.

Crystal told Doud she had changed her mind. Doud respected her decision, let her know that she would support her and help her with resources so she could parent her child.

An Adoption Plan

Three weeks later, Crystal called Doud. She was struggling as a parent and realized through her love for her daughter that she wanted a better life for her. She asked if she could still make an adoption plan and Doud told her she could. Within a couple of days, the baby was placed with the adoptive family Crystal originally selected.

Though sad, she wasn’t able to provide the life she wanted for her daughter. Crystal knows her baby will be in a family that loves her and will provide a great life for her. Crystal met the family, and because they choose an open adoption, she will get updates about her baby on a regular basis.
