Catholic Charities Community Services seeks volunteers to help those in need with their taxes.Training and materials provided

PHOENIX (Dec. 28, 2012) ─ Catholic Charities Community Services is seeking volunteers in Phoenix, Prescott/Quad Cities and Cottonwood to help low- to moderate-income families and individuals with their taxes. Volunteers will aid the agency’s efforts to provide free tax preparation to those in need and to help qualifying families and individuals to receive the federal earned income tax credit. Catholic Charities provides training and materials.

“Volunteers are the strength of this effort. Last year, our volunteers helped 891 low-moderate income families and individuals to receive more than $1,650,544 in tax refunds,” said Haley Hyatt, EmpowerU senior program manager for Catholic Charities. “We want to double our efforts this year because so many people don’t realize they’re eligible for the earned income tax credit. Our volunteers can help them get their maximum return without paying hundreds of dollars for tax preparation.”

Volunteers are needed as greeters, site coordinators and tax preparers. IRS training and materials are provided.

Catholic Charities Community Services is an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provider. VITA tax preparation is a free service and part of EmpowerU, a Catholic Charities program to help vulnerable individuals and families to permanently improve their financial situations and achieve long-term prosperity through education, skill and resource building, planning and mentoring.

The agency will begin offering free tax preparation in early February and continue through April 15.

Trainings are ongoing. To volunteer or for more information, contact the Catholic Charities office nearest you:
