Catholic Charities Community Services seeks volunteers to help those in need with their taxes. Training and materials provided

PHOENIX (Oct. 24, 2011) ─ Catholic Charities Community Services is seeking volunteers in Phoenix, the Quad Cities and Cottonwood to help low-moderate to moderate-income families and individuals with their taxes. Volunteers will aid the agency’s efforts to provide free tax preparation to those in need and to help qualifying families and individuals to receive the federal earned income tax credit. Catholic Charities provides training and materials.

“Volunteers are the strength of this effort. Last year, our volunteers helped 423 low-moderate income families and individuals to receive more than $450,397 in tax refunds,” said Aaron Stiner, Paths of HOPE senior program manager for Catholic Charities. “We want to double our efforts this year because so many people don’t realize they’re eligible for the earned income tax credit. Our volunteers can help them get their maximum return without paying hundreds of dollars for tax preparation.”

Catholic Charities Community Services is an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provider. VITA tax preparation is a free service and part of Paths of HOPE, a Catholic Charities program to help motivated individuals and families permanently improve their financial situations and achieve their dreams through a continuum of education, personal empowerment, resource building and mentorship.

The agency will begin offering free tax preparation in early February and continue through April 15.

Trainings are ongoing. To volunteer or more information, contact the Catholic Charities office nearest you:
